Section Three > The Beauty Of God's Holiness

What does holiness look like?   Do images of bunned hair, long skirts and black stockings pop into your mind?  Is it a list of do’s and don’ts such as no smoking, drinking and dancing?  To some people, it means an unattainable perfection – one will never measure up to the standard.  Others identify with the thoughts of A. W. Tozer:  “We have learned to live with unholiness and have come to look upon it as a natural and expected thing.  We are not disappointed that we do not find all truth in our teachers or complete honesty in our merchants or full trustworthiness in our friends.”

The holiness of God is closely related with the other attributes of God.  His love is a holy love. His anger is holy anger.  These concepts are beyond the human mind to fully understand. How are we to respond to a holy God? How can we become holy?  This last lesson will challenge your mind and will as we study.

  1. What does the word” holy” mean to you? When you think about the holiness of God, what words come to your mind?
  2. Read 1 Samuel 2:2; Revelation 4:8; Isaiah 6:1-4; 1 Peter 1:16. How does the Bible describe God’s holiness?
  3. Habakkuk addresses God: “But You are pure and cannot stand the sight of evil. Will you wink at their treachery?” (Habakkuk 1:13 NLT) What adjective and behavioural descriptions are used to illustrate God`s holiness? How do the other attributes of God help you understand the holiness of God?
  4. Read Isaiah 6:1-5 and 2 Chronicles 26. Compare and contrast the responses of Isaiah and King Uzziah towards the holiness of God. How is your perception of God influenced by reading these passages?
  5. Comment on this statement: “The holiness of God makes the gospel a glorious necessity.” Is there any hope for anyone being holy here and now? How are both the wrath and the love of God expressed in the cross?
  6. “I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice – the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him.” (Roman 12:1 NLT) What does Paul mean by giving your body as "a living sacrifice" to God? How can one continue to grow in holiness?
  7. “Of all God’s attributes, nothing compares to the splendour and beauty of His holiness. It is chief among His attributes. That means His character is perfect in every way. He is totally pure." (Bill Bright) “The holiness of God is basic to our whole understanding of God and of Christianity.” (R. C. Sproul) Do you agree? Why or why not?
  8. How has this study (along with any previous studies in this series) changed your view of God? What truths have most challenged or comforted you?
  9. What additional thoughts or questions do you have on this study?
  10. Please pray for me in these areas.
