Section Three > God's Majesty Reigns

A young boy, Timothy, lived in a densely populated city. High rise buildings were crowded into a small area. He travelled to another country and for the first time he saw a long stretch of open green fields.  He was so amazed at the scenery and he cried out, “The sky is so “BIG” here!”  At night he loved to see the sky with all the twinkling stars and daytime the white puffy clouds floating above.  King David expressed a similar thought in Psalm 8:1, “O Lord, our Lord, the majesty of your name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens.”

The sovereignty of God, His “majesty“, “greatness” and “goodness” are fully expressed by His creation and His salvation plan.   This study will help you to uncover the mystery of human free will and God’s sovereign and majestic rule over all creation.

  1. What comes to mind when you hear the word “sovereign”? Some people would say “How lucky” or “How fortunate” when everything just came out perfectly right or when one escaped from a car accident? Would you agree or disagree? Why?
  2. “God’s sovereignty is the attribute by which He rules His entire creation.” Please discuss this statement.
  3. Please read Daniel 2:21; 4:35. What are the limitations of the rule of the earthly kings? How does the story of Daniel show that God is the ruler of the universe?
  4. Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-13 and Daniel 4:28-32 and compare the attitudes of King David and Nebuchadnezzar toward God.
  5. The descriptive word “Almighty” is used of God in Job 40:2 and many other passages. What is meant by this word? Isaiah 45:7 states that God forms both light and creates darkness. He also creates both peace and calamity. Compare and contrast the rule of earthly kings and of God in light of these scriptures.
  6. If God rules His universe by His sovereign decrees, how is it possible for man to exercise free will? And if man cannot exercise freedom of choice, how can he be held responsible for his conduct?
  7. Consider Joseph’s life in Genesis 37-39, with particular reference to Genesis 50:19-20. What was Joseph’s conclusion about all the wrongs that had been done to him? How does Joseph’s view of God’s sovereignty affect his relationship with God, those in authority and others?
  8. It is important to keep other attributes of God in mind when we discuss God’s sovereignty. Choose one or two of the attributes we’ve studied, and discuss the effect when missing one. (For example, what would it be like if God were loving, but not sovereign? What would it be like if God is sovereign but unwise?)
  9. What additional thoughts or questions do you have on this study?
  10. Please pray for me in these areas.
