Section Two > God's Ways Are Perfect

“If the universe is so bad, or even half so bad, how on earth did human beings ever come to attribute it to the activity of a wise and good Creator?” (C.S. Lewis).  What does the Bible mean when it calls God wise?  Wisdom is moral goodness and its fullness can only be found in God.  We all desire to attain wisdom. This study will consider God’s wisdom and will help you discover what constitutes a wise person and the source of wisdom.

  1. What is the general opinion of our society about the difference between the one who possesses knowledge and one who demonstrates wisdom? How would you define wisdom?
  2. “Scripture wisdom is a moral as well as an intellectual quality, more than mere intelligence or knowledge. To be truly wise, our intelligence and cleverness must be harnessed to a right end. Wisdom is the power to see, and the inclination to choose, the best and highest goal, together with the surest means of attaining it” (J.I. Packer). What constitutes true wisdom? Please discuss based on the quotation.
  3. Read 1 Kings 3:1-28 and 4:29-34. Where is the true source of wisdom? How does it increase our understanding of the character of God, especially His moral attributes?
  4. “To God, who only is wise,” Romans 16:27. What does it mean that God is wise? How might we know or see His wisdom? Why is it important to know that God is wise?
  5. The Apostle Paul teaches that the gospel is the true wisdom of God. How is God’s wisdom shown in the cross? God’s wisdom is not, and never was, pledged to keep a fallen world happy. Christians have not been promised a trouble-free life.
  6. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7). What is the meaning of fear here? What is the relationship between wisdom and knowledge?
  7. What does God teach us about seeking God’s guidance in James 1:5-7? How would you approach God for wisdom? How does doubt affect receiving wisdom from God?
  8. “With the goodness of God to desire our highest welfare, the wisdom of God to plan it, and the power of God to achieve it, what do we lack?” (A. W. Tozer). You may refer to some biblical examples or your own story or the story of someone you know to illustrate the plan of God demonstrating His great wisdom. How would your understanding of God’s wisdom affect your faith in God?
  9. What additional thoughts or questions do you have on this study?
  10. Please pray for me in these areas.
