Lesson One: But the Fruit of the Spirit is...

Spend time imagining Christ as a vine and you as a branch, bearing His fruit. What ideas of the type of relationship He wants with you do you gather from this image found in John 15? What questions about your relationship with Him do you want to ask Him?  Ask him to give you insight into what it means to abide in Him. Think of a situation that is overwhelming you. How does seeing yourself as firmly attached to Christ, being nourished constantly by Him, help you face that situation?

Questions to ponder: Does a universal definition of beauty exist, or does each of us have a different vision of what beauty is? What is your definition of beauty? Does belief in God influence our vision of what is beautiful? If yes, how? If not, why not? Does God have a definition of beauty? If so, is his definition the only right one?

(Read Ephesians 5:25-30, Romans 8:24-29, 2 Corinthians 3:17-18  and 1 Peter 3:3-4  for  possible descriptions of God’s view of beauty. Could Galatians 5:22-23 be a description of  beauty from God’s perspective?)

  1. In Galatians 5.22, who does Paul say is the one who produces the fruit he is describing? Do we have a part to play in that production?
  2. In your opinion, how does the Spirit go about producing His fruit in us?
  3. In the Greek text, the word ‘fruit’ is karpos (καρπ_σ). It is in the singular. Why do you think Paul used the word fruit in the singular to describe the qualities the Spirit produces?
  4. The Spirit of God, God Himself, comes to live in us when we surrender our life to Christ. What does the fact that God comes to dwell not only near you, but in you, tell you about Him and His attitude towards you?
  5. In John 15, verses 1 and 2, to what does Jesus compare Himself? To what does he compare us? Why do you think he uses this image ?
  6. What is our purpose and how can we accomplish it, according to verses 5-17?
  7. What are the consequences of not abiding in Christ (verses 2-6)? What benefits will we experience if we abide in Christ (verses 1 to 17)?
  8. In this passage, as in Galatians 5:16-23, we find a contrast. There are two images: a beautiful image of life, fruitfulness and abundance, and a desolate image of lifelessness, uselessness and destruction. How does Jesus’ use of a contrast between beauty and desolation affect you?
  9. Do you see the life Jesus invites you to live as beautiful, pleasurable? Why or why not?
  10. Do you have any further thoughts or how can we pray for you regarding this study?
