Facing Life's Disappointments (Ruth 1)

Childless and widowed, the young woman faced what appeared to be a dark future. Her mother-in-law came to her with news that she would be returning to her hometown, and suggested that the young woman return to her family. How would she face the loss and disappointment? This study begins a new series of studies in the Old Testament book of Ruth.

  1. What do you know of the setting of the book of Ruth? (See Judges 21:25, Ruth 1:1) What challenges was Naomi facing (vs. 1-3)?
  2. How was Naomi related to Orpah and Ruth?
  3. The three women faced much loss at the opening of Ruth chapter one. How would you describe the situation they faced?
  4. What advice did Naomi give to her daughters-in-law? How would you describe the relationship of these three women? Were these women close? Does Naomi seem to care for the young women? Do they care for her?
  5. What glimpses do you have of the view or relationship each of these women had with her God (or gods)?
  6. How did their view or relationship affect the way they chose to face their losses and disappointments?
  7. How does your view of God affect your response to the challenges of life?
  8. How can you allow adversity to drive you towards God and further commitment to Him?
  9. What additional thoughts or questions do you have on this study?
