Facing Life's Disappointments (Ruth 1)

Childless and widowed, the young woman faced what appeared to be a dark future. Her mother-in-law came to her with news that she would be returning to her hometown, and suggested that the young woman return to her family. How would she face the loss and disappointment? This study begins a new series of studies in the Old Testament book of Ruth.

What do you know of the setting of the book of Ruth? (See Judges 21:25, Ruth 1:1) What challenges was Naomi facing (vs. 1-3)?

Naomi and Elimelech came from the hometown of "Bethlehem," which means "House of Bread." Yet due to a famine, they moved with their sons to Moab, less than fifty miles away. It is said that on a clear day one may see the fields of Moab from the hillsides surrounding Bethlehem.
How was Naomi related to Orpah and Ruth?
The three women faced much loss at the opening of Ruth chapter one. How would you describe the situation they faced?

When one faces much loss, it can be easy to give up hope. In her grief, Naomi blamed God for her situation (vs. 13).
What advice did Naomi give to her daughters-in-law? How would you describe the relationship of these three women? Were these women close? Does Naomi seem to care for the young women? Do they care for her?
What glimpses do you have of the view or relationship each of these women had with her God (or gods)?

You may wish to list all that Naomi says about God. Note the request she has of God for Ruth and Orpah (vs. 8), and contrast it with how she views God's actions toward her. Then consider how Ruth seems to view God in this opening chapter.
How did their view or relationship affect the way they chose to face their losses and disappointments?

In vs. 20, Naomi tells the women to call her "Mara," meaning "bitter," rather than "Naomi," which means "pleased." Consider for a moment the honesty with which Naomi shares her struggles. In her pain, she faces real challenges as she blames God and acknowledges her own bitterness. Can we be as honest and open with God and a few trusted friends when we struggle?
How does your view of God affect your response to the challenges of life?

If a friend or young child asked you what God is like, how would you respond? If you were able to see God looking at you across the room, what expression do you think you'd see on His face? How does this affect your view of and response to challenging days?
How can you allow adversity to drive you towards God and further commitment to Him?

Ruth's commitment (Ruth 1:16-17) is to Naomi, her people, and her God.
